Apple Airtag Deal

Hi anyone know any deals on airtags I'm after 2.

With Noel Leeming and CSC there's a 5% discount. Does any other membership give better than 5%?

If not Heathcote have them for $54 each.

  • Noel Leeming has a buy limit of one unit so you would need two transactions.
Alternatively, Mighty Ape has them at $55 and if you got the free Primate trial you could get it delivered free. Doesn’t look like they limit quantity.
Heathcotes is $6.95 shipping to me in Christchurch

  • noel leeming discounts aren't calculated like that. They're cost + n%

Have you considered alternatives? I like the eufy smarttrack at the moment. It piggybacks on the apple find my system. So essentially it's an airtag without the cost and has a better form factor in my opinion. Currently about $34 on aliexpress, it does get cheaper if you keep a watch on it there.

Thank you for this! I really like the idea of stashing airtags with some of my work equipment lest it go walkabout but they're prohibitively expensive and I don't think it's worthwhile using anything other than the Find My network due to Apple's ubiquity in the world. These sound perfect.

    • Second on some of the air tag alternatives. They are better in some ways as you can disable the ability for thieves to detect them, But they don't have precision finding if that is important to you, though for my usage case I find general location and the audio beeps plenty enough.

      • The benefit of air tags is the battery life is really good. Some of the alternatives, the battery life is terrible. So over several years you are probably pay the same or more as an air tag with all the extra batteries you are buying. Not sure how good the Eufy batteries are and it maybe better.

  • Can someone share some highly technical details on the differences between AirTag and the alternatives? I've looked up Youtube reviews and articles and the information they've provided are all very basic and sometimes even contradicting.

I looked at Momax PinTag and one of the articles says this:

"If your PinTag is beyond Bluetooth range of your own devices, it will use nearby iPhones, iPads, and Macs on the Find My network to anonymously update its location, which you can then view in the Find My app."

I also found this on PBTech:

"Precise positioning | Can be located within 15 meters No installation required | Connects with the iOS built-in search app"

So my understanding is that it will use Apple's Find My network as a piggyback and that you can precisely track it within 15 meters using bluetooth on your phone. How is this any different to AirTag? I know AirTag uses UWB and the alternatives don't. But it seems like the alternatives DO have precision tracking? Or is this different?

Furthermore, does precision tracking on an AirTag require Bluetooth to be enabled? Or does it just somehow track magically without Bluetooth? If the difference here is that AirTag can do precision tracking without Bluetooth, while alternatives require Bluetooth to track, then the latter may not be reliable.

And regarding AirTag's anti-stalking feature, how quickly does this kick in? If someone steals my wallet with my AirTag inside and the thief uses an iPhone, will his phone immediately pick up my AirTag and alert him that an unknown AirTag is following him? Or will it only do this after a few hours, or a few days? I don't want the thief to know there's an AirTag with the stolen item, because he could just take out the battery or chuck the AirTag in a public bin. I want to be able to track my stolen item with precision. If the anti-stalking feature only kicks in after a few hours, then that's fine because it gives me a small window to track the item before the thief notices he's being tracked by an AirTag.

  • I have heard, Eufy tag uses same tracking as Apple tags and almost on par with them. Don't have experience with either, but want to get one Eufy tag to play around. Might get one from Aliexpress if I see a deal.

  • Can anyone who has an AirTag do a quick test for me? I'd like to know if an unknown AirTag gets picked up relatively quickly or not. For example, let's say your friend's AirTag is following you (maybe it's in your bag) and your iPhone picks this up. How quickly does it notify you? Within 10 minutes? Or after a few hours?

I've tested the AirTag precise location tracking and it's exactly what I need. Other competitors just don't come close when it comes to this. But due to the anti-stalking feature, a thief who has stolen your item can also see that an unknown AirTag is tracking them (assuming they have an iPhone). If they can only see this after a few hours, then that's fine, as it gives me a small window to get my item back. But if they can be notified immediately, then they could chuck the AirTag in a public bin.

I have an iPhone 8 and my GF's AirTag was left in my house for hours. But my iPhone didn't pick it up, even though I had the Find My app open in the foreground the whole time. So I have no idea how this works. I'm also not an iOS user, I'm only using iPhone for occasional hacking.

    • my ex used to get 'unknown airtag' notifications when she'd use my keys or sometimes just if we were out together

      • how soon does that notification come through?

  • For anyone interested, Noel Leeming has a deal for 4 packs @ $170, which comes out to $42.5 each, not too bad. Deal ends tonight though.

PBTech also has the same deal, but no stock until mid June.

I'm also considering getting something like this to counter the anti-stalking feature:

    • If you want one last go at The Market before it shuts up shop you can also get it there too from Noel Leeming.
Bonus is free shipping if you have MarketClub+
      https://themarket.com/nz/p/apple-airtag-4-pack/4-204568

    • Costco had it for $169.99 few weeks back and on fb still shows same price.

      • Need to pay membership for Costco and it's just easier for me to go to PBTech or Noel Leeming since they're really close to my house. Prefer buying it from a retail place than FB.
