  • Hi, thanks for your great website. I have used it in the past without issue.

I am currently trying to book 2 tickets and am being majorly stressed out. What do I do? I have tried around 6 times now and it keeps on doing this! It still shows the correct price everywhere even when I redo the search, it just always prevents the payment from going through. I have tried both google pay and credit card. It changes the price to either $9400 or $11000 everytime. Tried clearing cookies. Just such scummy behaviour. Haven't experienced this before with economy fares.

And then the price proceeds to rise on the search too. Just unbelievable stuff

    • It's always a risk with these faceless travel agencies unfortunately.

      • Yes, but surely this can't be deemed acceptable. I imagine it must only be happening to me because the price I found is too good. Because how would they still be operating if they did this to everyone.

And the discrepancy between $9400 and $11000 is enormous so I already know they're feeding me bullshit

    • And now mytrip is $9900 on the search. This is getting ridiculous.

      • They can do what they want unfortunately and you can't do anything about it so…. Be careful.

They won't be bound to any NZ laws. Even if they are you won't be able to find them anyway.

        • I think something must have happened because the price is now updated to $11500.

          • @Bill: 2 tickets to KL?

            • @Discount Code: no, looks like I may be fine if I book 2 tickets individually, but I don't trust anything to work properly anymore.

              • @Bill: Comes down to how much cheaper it is vs going direct with the airline.

                • +1

@Discount Code: Booking direct with the airline is actually very similarly priced. Only around $300 more on a $10000 flight

    • Just got hit by another scam, added the Agency Fee when I selected my payment method after I had to enter all the passport information. Not the same price as the search is showing at all.

      • 😭

        • These websites are so demoralising, and OP has just completely ignored me. Every time I see his status as Online Now I gain a little hope, then it changes to last seen and I realise I'm on my own.

          • @Bill: Have you tried booking it through another site for the deal? For example mytrip.com where you are trying to book is the cheapest option on paper. But there are other choices such as gotogate?

            • @Signit63: Yes, there are only 3 options cheaper than booking direct, the 2nd one had the Agency fee and the 3 is a carbon copy website of the first while being more expensive than the revised price

              • @Bill: What dates are you trying for?

                • @Signit63: I had a travel agent find the flights, they are very suitable.

          • +1

@Bill: @Bill, I get that this is frustrating but the OP has done us many favours finding these great deals. OP is not a travel agent and has no obligation to help you.

I have booked a few fares or similar pricing once alerted to the great deals that are posted thanks to beatthatflight and would be remiss without their support of this community.

I think we just need to be grateful and not take out our frustrations on OP.

            • @bobsyouruncle: There's nothing the OP can help with given the issue is with the 3rd party websites. The travel agent I'm talking about is not OP. The flights I'm looking at are also not related to the deals OP has posted, just usage of the website in general, which has issues with the 3rd party websites that I have documented in the photos. I could reach out to OP to inform of these issues in the search through the website contact page, but I chose to show the unethical practices these websites employ for others to see and to inform OP so their website can be improved and prevent people from being misled.

OP only owns the website beat that flight. The frustrating problems are coming from the 3rd party websites which are changing their prices right before you pay.

Also, when we are using the term "unreliable site" or "website" in general, we are referring to the third party sites, not OP's website.

      • Any luck if you try searching for the same flights on SkyScanner or Google Flights?

        • All around similar prices except for google flights, which is a few hundred more expensive.

Cheapest on skyscanner is still mytrip.

    • Will probably just give in and book it for $9365 and let mytrip take the extra $181. It's basically just the payment fee mytrip on skyscanner has and it still works out $42 cheaper in total. I figure if they need to adjust the price, it's probably because they can't afford to sell it for any less.

      • +1

Makes no sense. You are spending over 9k and using these unreliable sites to save 42 bucks? Or did I misunderstood you?

        • Beat That Flight's unreliable site = $9365

          Skyscanner's same unreliable site = $9407

Travel agent (reliable source) = just under $10000
          Booking direct = $10062

These flights are not for me. Family members are going overseas and told me the price of their flights from their travel agent and I confidently told them I could get it for cheaper. That's how I ended up here in this mess.

The fact you thought I was sitting around for 4 hours to save $42 on my $10000 flights is pretty hilarious.

          • @Bill: So you are saving 700 bucks. That's still not worth the risk to me. It's less than 10% difference. Just saying.

            • @Discount Code: What risk is there? If I don't need to cancel the flights, what difference will there be?

    • Note that that's mytrip.com - not beatthatflight, I can only surface what they present in their fares. :/

And in fairness to them, the pricing algorithms are always changing, and because of the literally millions of combinations, they can't always query every seat on every flight, so have to cache them. Then once you say you want a ticket, they can force a refresh of that single seat/flight/date combo, and sometimes that's when they discover the price has changed out beneath them.

I know someone at a major airline who is working with the AIRLINE's own direct price, and comparing to the underlying GDS data and is frustrated by how often it doesn't match - and that's not even an online travel agent.

    • I actually booked a different set of flights using I think mytrip or a different beat that flight website for a multi stop trip that started 5 weeks ago for my other family members. They are still on holiday, but I don't think there were any issues with the flights.

      • oh good to know. I've never dared book a trip from mytrip as they seemed far too shady

        • To be honest at that point I didn't even realise there was any difference between the websites. I just figured it looked like everyone was using them and if it's linked to the website it must be fine.

Then today I when I was about to pay nine thousand dollars into a website that looks like it hasn't been updated since 2009 I started to question myself. And then using random ones on kayak that look like it's run from some random guy in Europe's laptop also felt off.

I have at least some faith the ones on beat that flight are somewhat trustworthy.

          • @Bill: Thanks, and that's one of the downsides - people who write the online reviews tend to be people with bad experiences :/ Like the opposite of survivorship bias I guess. I've personally used mytrip, myholidays, trip, kiwi, gotogate and others with no issues (so far).

        • I've personally used them without hassle. Have a write up here about OTAs and why they are sometimes so much cheaper, and in all my years of 80+ countries, I've used online agencies since 2008 with only one hiccup - because of a certain global pandemic, and even then I got credit.

          • @beatthatflight: Thanks, that gives me a lot of reassurance.

And you got the credit without paying for all the extra services and protections, right?

I assume those are just a way for the OTA to upsell useless stuff.

            • @Bill: Oh absolutely, I always skip all the extra stuff. That's how they make their money - the upsells on txt messages, insurance, sometimes even choosing a seat when you can actually do that on the airline's own site!
