Pillow Recommendation - Looking for the perfect one

Been on a journey to look for the perfect pillow (as many others). Have tried a few pillows already this year:
https://www.briscoes.co.nz/product/1109066/greenfirst-allerg…
https://www.briscoes.co.nz/product/1102253/serta-down-altern…
they're both OK for the first week then sink after and gave me sore neck.
I'm a side-sleeper and back-sleeper if that matters.

Had a look at Ecosa pillow, seems like a good choice however bit reluctant as i've never spend that much for a pillow (the most was the Serta pillow at $40). Anyone can share their view on ecosa pillow? Was thinking I'll give it a try anyway since they have the 100-day return policy.

Another recommendation I read from reddit is this memory foam pillow from Kmart: https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/cooling-gel-top-memory-foam-… Anyone can share their view as well?

Thanks.

  • I'm using Downtime Memory Rest Pillows, a little expensive but I think they're much better quality than Kmart ones.

Consider buying a firmer mattress, or even just putting a makeshift futon on the floor, if you can't afford to get a new mattress. I made my own using a camping mat for the first layer and then a folded up queen size winter weight wool blanket for extra padding. But most days I sleep on an Emma Comfort mattress..

If your mattress is too soft you might not be getting the back support you need.

    • I'm already on a firm mattress albeit it's 7 years old already.
I have only tried the $10-$40 pillows ao far ao abit reluctant apending the money but age is catching up so perhaps it's time to make the purchase

  • There's no risk in trying the Ecosa pillow (aside from the minor inconvenience of printing the return label and taking it to the post office). My wife and I tried them; she still has hers and loves it, I didn't like mine and returned it. The height is quite adjustable but I didn't like the density; too soft and clumpy.

    • I have tried the similar countour pillow, cheap $15 ones off Marketplace and like you said it's soft and clumpy but I find the issue with me is the height. On its own is too low but with another pillow is too high.

    • Yeah the Ecosa gave me a sore neck. Way too soft. A bit strange when you consider how firm their mattresses are

      • just wondering, whether you tried winkl pillow and if it's soft like Ecosa?

        • I have not. I ended up with a contour pillow I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond. It's not as fat as the Ecosa, but it's firmer.

Everyone is different so what works for someone may not work for others. Pillows are a hard one to crack. I'm still on the lookout for another, because I want to move away from memory foam due to how warm they get

  • Kmart Memory foam Medium (https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/memory-foam-pillow-with-bamb…) has been my favourite so far, I even prefer it over some significantly more expensive down pillows.

  • the perfect pillow is no pillow

  • Wife had a sore neck and went with Ecosa. She told me after a few weeks that it helped and is still using the pillow for about a year now. Height is also adjustable.

I’m also a back and side sleeper and have been on the hunt for a poofy pillow as I usually sleep with two pillows. So far I’ve really liked this gusseted pillow from BBB. I’ve had it for about 3 months and it has maintained its poof. You have to really squeeze it into a standard pillow case though. With it I can sleep with a single pillow.

    • Cheers, I'll go to the store and try it out

Highly recommend a latex pillow. Much more supportive and responsive than memory foam.

    • Had the cheap latex pillow from marketplace but i feel its too low. Probably bevause its $12.

    • That's what I ended up getting from TLC Latex Pillows
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/tlclatexpillows.com.au

Think I paid around $180 for two pillows and two pillow protectors.

      • how are you finding it?

        • I got the classic plus pillow. Very comfortable, though the protector does make it a bit stiffer and make it feel a little bit higher than I would like. But it could also be me needing to get used to a pillow like this still.

Recommend reading the comments over on OzB too.

  • I have galaxy contour pillow which I like. Been using it for more than a year now and it has retained the shape. It is not too soft, but soft enough to take the shape when you sleep. I am a side sleeper mostly and this is great. I sometimes push it in middle to lower the height when I sleep on stomach. Yes feel like sleeping like that sometimes lol. Had thought about ecosa pillow before, just couldn't justify the cost that time.

    • Thanks, I'll wait until brisoes has massive sale again (soon tm)

      • Its a sale everyday there ;)

  • I bought some wise wool cloud fill (wool knops) around a year ago from kindface and made my own pillow. I'd never go back to anything else. It's moldable, cool, soft, adjustable. I no longer wake up sore. Every few months I take the filling out to give it an air and its like brand new.
Kindface and others also do pre made pillows with wise wool or wright wool. A bit more expensive initially but definitely worth it

I got lucky, i went to my local salvos store who get alot of ecosa stuff. They sell the ones people return but it always comes sealed in the vacuum bags in the box like brand new. No weird smells, comes with the bags and adjustable things just as it were brand new. Honestly it may as well be new. Got it for $30 same price as if i spent a pillow from briscoes. Great for side sleepers. Love it, doesn't sag.

    • That's a bargain! May I l know which salvos store do you go to? Thanks

    • Good point on the salvos. I might pop in to local hospice today

    • An update, no ecosa stuffs ( no mattress nor piklow) at hospice, at least the one in ellice rd

      • I know GI and Dominion Rd gets them

    • $300?!?!?!?

This one is great. I use it now.

Wait for it to come down to $59

  • Thanks guys, I ended up using this one: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.co.nz/Product/PI0153/Cloud-9-Co… and seemed to be Ok for now. been using it for a month and no sore neck (so far)
