Customs and Receiving Goods

Hi All,

Just wondering whats the deal say if:

My brother buys 2 phones (under NZD$850 total) in Aus, opens them tests them make sure everythings good and then post them over to Nz?
Will customs ping them for being new goods and so would I have to pay fees etc?

Comments

  • depends what value he declared them at when shipping, generally under 1000nzd is okay.
If he opens them, declares them as used phones and / or gift with a lower value then you'll have less issues again.
If in doubt check on the what's my duty calculator. https://www.customs.govt.nz/personal/duty-and-gst/whats-my-d…

  • So long its under 1k should be fine.
you might have to produce an invoice but never had anyone ask despite importing things at the 900$ mark
If you know anyone going to aus soon you could use TRS and get the Tax back

  • If it is <$1000 nzd including shipping then you are fine.

He should declare a value and include an invoice as proof.

If he is exporting to NZ more than $xx goods annualy then he needs to register for gst, i think xx it's $60,000 from memory.

    • Don't think shipping is included in the threshold to be charged for GST.

I've ordered stuff before around $950 with shipping taking it over $1000 and haven't been pinged for GST.

      • shipping is definitely included in the threshold. you were just lucky.

        • +1

I think shipping is excluded from the threshold but it's included in the GST calculation if the value of the goods is over the threshold.

"The NZ$1000 threshold is based on the customs value of the goods. This means transport and insurance costs are excluded when determining if GST needs to be charged."
          https://www.customs.govt.nz/about-us/news/important-notices/…

          "How is the GST calculated?
GST is calculated at 15% on the total of the value of the goods, plus duty (if applicable), plus postal/courier and insurance charges."
          https://www.customs.govt.nz/personal/duty-and-gst/faqs/

          "What is a low-value good?
A low-value good is a physical good valued at NZ$1,000 or less.
This NZ$1,000 threshold is based on the customs value of the
good. This means transport and insurance costs are excluded when
determining if GST needs to be charged."

I've just put in a toy costs $999NZD and shipping costs $100.

          Date: 30 April 2024
          Item 1
          Toys
          Original value
          999.00 NZD
          NZ Value @1 exchange rate
          999.00 NZD
          Duty @0.05
          49.95 NZD
          GST @15%
          157.34 NZD
          Item duty
          207.29 NZD
          Freight
          1,000.00 NZD
          GST on freight
          150.00 NZD
          Sub total
          0.00 NZD
          Total to pay
          0.00
Since the total value of the goods is less than or equal to $1000, the duty is waived.

          • @Stoic: shipping is excluded from the threshold but it's included in the GST calculation if the value of the goods is over the threshold.

that's interesting, thank you for sharing that. i had historicaly always been careful to not buy anything over $1000 incl shipping. i guess i can buy more expensive stuff now! :)
