Damn it! That looks pretty good.

I just bought this on trademe for $62 delivered:
    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=825426466

It uses an N450 Atom CPU, I wonder if this thing is faster.
Was wanting something to run a standalone low power torrent box.

  • I think it's only really "much much much much" faster with multithreaded applications , as the single core in the intel is clocked a bit faster. Hopefully the N450 is fast enough for utorrent. I did read that the HDD write speed via the USB is very slow on the pipo.

    • Anything will run Utorrent, don't worry about that.

I'm renting a server in Germany with Xeon CPU, 16GB ram, and 2 * 3TB drives for ~$50/month to host my media server and content (Plex).

      • That's an interesting idea. I have 16TB of media in my htpc. I really need to get a VPN though, thus far I've been ok. The idea is to have my htpc power down more often. The torrent box will grab files, and the htpc will intermittently empty the networked torrentbox.

        • I don't have enough time to watch that much.

Like a one way sync with removal?

What is the power usage of the HTPC? Is that the concern? Or just wear and tear?

  • No idea what the power useage is, but it probably adds up. The HDD spin down when not in use, so the main wear and tear would just be the fans and accumulation of dust in the fan filters from always being on.

yes, one way sync with removal. the only issue maybe that utorrent might want to go on seeding files and might prevent local deletion, might need to use a different program or write a utorrent removal script.

    • Is it running with a GPU? You'd more than likely be looking at less than $5 a month if it is just a small box, all depends on what's in it.

  • Silverstone X460 PSU i3-2100, 3x4GB ram, onboard gpu (but I am getting a new gpu maybe), 120gb SSD, 4x3TB 1x4TB 1x6TB. Also a video card and tv-tuner that are being powered but not actually used). CPU Fan, 4x low rpm case fan, video card fan.

    • You'd be looking at about $15 a month to run that. It might cut 25-50% off that by running the laptop half the time, but adds another point of failure.

  • hmm might only be 100W idle.

    • I calculated that without the gpu and tuner it'd idle around 80W.
