Air New Zealand Sale Fares

Something that has bothered me for some time is the marketing favoritism from Air New Zealand between us Kiwi's and the Aussies. For example, there is a sale on today, from the same carrier, to the same destination, at much differing costs.

I can fly from Melbourne to Auckland to LA and back via the same route, for roughly half the price I can from Auckland. The flights from Melbourne include the exact same flights from Auckland, on the same time and date, plus the Melbourne flights. Examples below.

Air New Zealand sale fare from Auckland to Los Angeles - Saturday 7th Feb - Wednesday 4th March - $1493.00 NZD
Air New Zealand sale fare from Melbourne to Los Angeles - Saturday 7th Feb - Wednesday 4th March - $843.52 AUD or $875 NZD

I understand that you might argue that one is in AUD and one NZD, so to counter this, I have converted it into NZD.

Could anyone please explain to me why Air New Zealand, our national carrier, can offer the exact same route, plus home leg, for $618 less than they can for the shorter flight from Auckland?

This is not a one off, it happens every sale event, and I'm curious as to why they insist on excluding us Kiwi's from these good deals.
